If, within a paragraph, you need some words to use the same font and size, but to be shown in cursive, that is what you use a character style for. Say you need most of your paragraphs to use the Nimbus Roman No 9 font with a size of 9 dots, you want the text to be left-justified and the first line to be indented by 3 mm - well, that’s the sort of thing you set up in a paragraph style. Simply put: Paragraph styles allow you to determine how whole paragraphs look, while character styles are applied to one character or a group of selected characters. The Styles dialogue allows you to create and edit new paragraph and character styles. Also because the other three are pretty self-explanatory. You’ll be concentrating on the first two, since they are the most useful. There are five types of styles you can play with: Paragraph, Character, Table, Cell, and Line. To get started creating styles, click on Edit > Styles and the Styles dialogue window will open. you can first format the paragraph to your liking and then create a style from it, Scribus has no such feature (yet?).
